Drunk driving remains the leading cause of death on our nation's roads, claiming the lives of almost 11,000 people in both 2017 and 2016, according to data released by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

Some 37,133 people died in traffic crashes in 2017--10,874 due to drunk driving, a decrease of 1.1% from 2016. In 2015 and 2016, drunk driving deaths and overall traffic fatalities had increased over the previous year.

"After two years of alarming increases in drunk driving deaths, the new data shows a very slight decrease for 2017, but that is not enough," says Colleen Sheehey-Church, national president of Mothers Against Drunk Driving.
