FAMILY RELATIONS
Interdisciplinary Journal of Applied Family Studies
Instructions to Authors
SUBMISSION GUIDELINES
Family Relations is peer-reviewed and published f‌ive times
per year by the National Council on Family Relations. We
publish high quality, scholarly research with a particular
emphasis on highlighting the implications of the research for
practitioners. Content areas within the broad f‌ield of family
studies are open, but all submissions should have a strong
theoretical or conceptual framework. Manuscripts that focus
on intergenerational relationships, family diversity, family
life education, and interdisciplinary approaches to family
needs, problems, and prevention/intervention are especially
encouraged.
Submit only previously unpublished work and do not
submit to other journals while under review by Family
Relations.
Remove all self-identifying information from the cover
page, and remove self-citations in both the text and
the references or replace with the words author
citation.
Prior to publication in FR, all authors must sign
a copyright agreement. Copyright assignment is a
condition of publication, and papers will not be
passed to the Publisher unless copyright has been
assigned. A link to the appropriate copyright form
can be found online during the submission process.
However, authors should not submit a copyright
form until their manuscript has been accepted for
publication.
Manuscripts must be submitted online. For complete
detailed instructions on uploading your manuscript,
please visit the Family Relations online submission
site (http://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/fr) and log on. If
you need assistance, select ‘‘get help.’’ Once logged on,
select ‘‘author center,’’ and then select ‘‘submit a new
manuscript.’’ If you do not have a user ID, click the ‘‘cre-
ate an account’’ icon and follow the online instructions.
Any major word processing software may be used; both
DOS-based and Macintosh operating systems are accept-
able.
Authors with no internet connection should contact the
Editorial Off‌ice.
The author checklists must be completed during the sub-
mission process.
Complete instructions for preparing and submit-
ting manuscripts online are provided at the submission
site and at http://www.ncfr.org/journals/family_relations/
submit/guide.asp. There also is an online tutorial avail-
able at ScholarOne Online Users Guide. If you need further
assistance, please contact the Editorial Off‌ice via e-mail at
familyrelations@uky.edu.
Please follow the appropriate APA (6th ed.) format when
submitting manuscripts online. A $25 processing fee also
will be collected at the time of submission.
MANUSCRIPT PREPARATION
Family Relations follows the guidelines of the Publica-
tion Manual of the American Psychological Association,
6th edition. A general section (pp. 240 – 243) covers
manuscript preparation and additional help is available
at www.apa.style.org. For more journal specif‌ic, detailed
instructions, as well as a manuscript preparation checklist,
seewww.ncfr.org/journals/family_relations/submit/prep.asp.
Double-space all parts of the manuscript including text,
headings, abstract, quotations, references, and tables.
Use WordPerfect or Microsoft Word and a 12-point font.
An abstract of no more than 150 words should precede
the body of the paper. (See APA Publication Manual, pp.
25 – 27.)
Immediately below the abstract, list up to six key words
by which the paper may be indexed.
Keep tables and f‌igures to a minimum. (See APA Publica-
tion Manual, pp. 125 – 167 for table and f‌igure guidelines.
Seehttp://www.ncfr.org/journals/family_relations/submit/
tables.asp for advice on constructing tables.)
Figures must be professionally prepared, camera-ready
glossy prints or high-quality laser prints. Digital f‌igures
must be .eps or .tif format at 1200 dpi for black and
white line art and 600 dpi for grayscale (more infor-
mation explaining f‌igure preparation in greater detail
is available for downloading at http://www.blackwell
publishing.com/authors/submit_illust.asp). When sub-
mitted digitally, always include one high-quality copy
of each f‌igure. Type titles and notes to f‌igures double
spaced on a separate manuscript page.
FR articles do not include footnotes, although a brief
note acknowledging f‌inancial support, assistance, and
previous presentation may be placed on the title page of
the manuscript. Do not thank the Editor or reviewers.
See the APA Publication Manual, pp. 174 179, for
guidelines to in-text citations.
Seepp. 193 224 in the Publication Manual for guidelines
in preparing the reference list. The reference list must
match work cited in the text.
Taken together, title or cover page, abstract, text, ref-
erences, tables, and f‌igures should be not longer than
approximately 30 double-spaced manuscript pages.
Authors will have the opportunity to make corrections to
proofs. Proofs must be returned within 72 hours of receipt
to assure publication in the next available issue.
