Passion and community involvement drive OSCPA 2009 Public Service Award winner: David A. Brockman, CPA: for Dave Brockman, CPA giving back to his community comes naturally and from the heart.

As managing director of Brockman, Coats Gedelian & Co., Brockman has a simple goal for volunteering--always aim to leave the organization in a better position than before you served. In recognition of his outstanding commitment to community service, Brockman was awarded OSCPA's 2009 Public Service Award.

"I'm pleased to have been recognized for my community service efforts," he said. "I have always felt that CPAs have unique skills that greatly benefit not-for-profit organizations."

Brockman and his partners have made "giving back" part of the culture at the Akron firm, encouraging associates to get involved where they have a passion and supporting them in their efforts to make a difference.

"When we first started our firm in 1986, most of the founders' money was tied up in supporting the business, but we agreed we could share our time and expertise," Brockman explained. "Today, we give associates time to volunteer and financially support the organizations they are involved in."

Brockman's strategic planning skills, honed from years of growing a firm, have been very valuable in improving efficiencies at other mission-based organizations.

As chair of the Board of United Disability Services, Inc. (UDS), he helped to hire a new president and consolidate four separate locations--and their programs and services--under one roof. This move profoundly shaped the future of the organization for the better.

He also has been active in United Way of Summit County since the mid 1980s in various capacities. He was chair of the Board for two years, and completed two three-year terms as a Board member this spring. He still serves on the Executive Campaign Council.

As chair, he helped restructure the United Way's relationship with its campaign partner, The American Red Cross. This process led to greater trust and enhanced working relationships between the two sponsoring organizations and the many agencies they fund.
