INTRODUCTION

According to the Administrative Oce of the U.S. Courts, the number of bankruptcy lings increased 16.2

percent for the 12-month period ending September 30, 2024. In 2024, bankruptcy lings totaled 504,112 as com-

pared to 452,990 cases led in 2023. Of that number, 298,644 were Chapter 7, 195,971 were Chapter 13, Chapter

11 lings totaled 9,012, and Chapter 12 lings totaled 202. Business lings increased from 18,926 to 22,762 lings,

and 481,350 were non-business lings, compared to 416,607 the previous year.

The courts’ website addresses are uniform and can be easily found by knowing a few simple rules. The rst

part is “www” for World Wide Web. Each court’s website address contains the state abbreviation (“ca” for exam-

ple). The next part of the address is either “n” for northern, “s” for southern, “e” for eastern, or “w” for western.

For example, the Northern District of California would insert an “n” after the state code (can). If a state has no

districts, the district letter is omitted. Each address is then followed by a “b” for bankruptcy. The Northern District

of California’s address, therefore, is “canb.” The next part of the address for all bankruptcy courts is “uscourts,”

followed by the type identier “gov” for a government site: www.canb.uscourts.gov. The bankruptcy court for

New Jersey is found at www.njb.uscourts.gov. Following these guidelines is an easy way to remember a court’s

website address.
