INTRODUCTION

In 1962, the Jurisprudence and Law Reform Committee of the Arkansas Bar Association recommended "adoption" by the Association of proposed "Title Standards for Arkansas." These standards were set out in full in 22 pages in the Arkansas Law Review, Vol. 16, No. 4, beginning at page 376. (That publication at the time also served as the Association's Journal). It is not clear just what action was taken beyond this publication of the 1962 standards, but they apparently were not otherwise distributed.

The Natural Resources Law Section of the Association, at its annual meeting in February 1993, appointed a committee chaired by Jim O'Hern of Fort Smith to consider remedies to this situation. By late spring of 1993, the committee had met three times and had expanded to include members of the Association's Real Estate Law Committee, some of whom had practiced in other states with uniform title standards.
