INTERVIEW WITH ALEXANDRA DARRABY ILS CO-CHAIR & AUTHOR OF DARRABY ON ART, ARTIFACT, ARCHITECTURE & MUSEUM LAW

By Catherine (Cathy) Carlisle

Cathy Carlisle: What drew you to the International Law Section (ILS)?

Alexandra Darraby: Growing up in an international city and working abroad—ILS is an extension of that milieu. People who work successfully in the international sector are curious, open, accepting, interested, interesting, and forgiving of cultural foibles. ILS is another way to meet such people.

CC: What are you most proud of accomplishing during your tenure as ILS Co-Chair?

AD: Several things, really, because the ILS Executive Committee (Ex Comm) has accomplished a lot in a short time under challenging circumstances. The first is and was establishing a platform for the Section during our tenure as Co-Chairs. The first in-person meeting of the ILS Ex Comm was held in San Francisco in January 2018, which coincided with the launch statewide of the CLA. The newness of the circumstances allowed us to launch a platform for ILS that was announced at that meeting: transparency, communication, outreach to membership, inclusion, and diversity. In an era of so many legal associations, all of which seek constituencies and members in a crowded market, these factors form a constructive way forward, and sustain longevity.

The second accomplishment that has been fun (are we allowed to use that word?) and so satisfying was hosting Multi-bar Foreign Delegates at the CLA first annual meeting. Some years ago I conceived and proposed a multinational Bar mini-United Nations conference at which ILS would invite all its Foreign Bar Friends under the ILS Friendship Agreements, as well as potential new Friends. As Co-Chair, I helped realize that goal, with the support of the ILS Ex Comm, CLA, and my co-chair Michael Newman. The inaugural CLA Annual Meeting in San Diego in September 2018 provided a perfect venue to honor CLA and our Foreign Friends. At our invitation, ILS was joined by almost 40 Foreign Bar Delegates from France, Japan, Malaysia, Mexico, and Viet Nam, some of whom came to the United States for the very first time as part of celebrating the inaugural CLA Annual meeting.

The best part of hosting our Foreign Bar Friends...
