OAS SECRETARY GENERAL, Jose Miguel Insulza, applauded the victory of Mauricio Funes, the presidential candidate of El Salvador's Farabundo Marti National Liberation Front and emphasized the procedural success of the elections which occurred without violence on March 15.

Insulza praised Salvadoran citizens "who showed their commitment to democracy, leaving behind a history of brutal confrontation that only brought pain and suffering to this beloved Central American country." The Secretary General also congratulated the groups that supported ARENA candidate Rodrigo Avila "for respecting civic processes, an essential attitude for assuring peace and harmony among political actors. They have demonstrated ma important lesson in civics."
