To observe the anniversary of the beginning of American slavery, New York Times magazine created The 1619 Project, an issue and special broadsheet section dedicated to the history of slavery and how it has affected life in the U.S. The project was released in August, the same month a ship carrying more than 20 enslaved Africans arrived 400 years ago. According to a Times Insider article, the idea was originally pitched by Nikole Hannah-Jones, a Times magazine staff writer.

The 1619 Project included essays from experts centered on various topics, from capitalism to music as well as a photo essay about the ancestry of a group of Howard University Law School graduates.
