The year 2006 will celebrate the 10th Anniversary of the landmark federal legislation known as the 1996 Telecommunication Act. The Act acknowledged the rapid development of technology and the universal consumer benefits of competitively provided telecommunication services.

In addition to Anchorage, Fairbanks and Juneau, 13 other Alaska communities are poised to have competitive local telephone service roll out. These consumers will receive service via the traditional copper wire, or with more advanced digital service delivered via cable TV coaxial wire, or broadband wireless technology.

Alaska has long been recognized for its high level of Internet usage and penetration. Estimates are that 90 percent of all Alaskans have access to some form of high-speed Internet delivered by cable modem, DSL or wireless technologies. Where else can one boast that every citizen--all 7,500 living in the geographic size of the state of Georgia--have access to high-speed Internet? The Arctic Northwest Borough can, and that's about as rural as it gets.
