Podcasts have swelled in popularity. According to a report published by Edison Research in April 2017, 40% of Americans (age 12 and above) have listened to a podcast. In the past month, 24% have listened to one, and 60% are familiar with the word “podcasting.”

Podcasts are audio files available for listeners to listen to on their computer, or on a portable device such as a smartphone or tablet. Episodes can also be downloaded to listen to later (downloading a podcast is called podcatching). This makes it easy to listen to entertaining content while on the go. Podcasts are available for ever y imaginable subject—humor, current events, true crime, history, sports, etc. Many radio programs are also available as podcasts.
