The flu hit America unusually early this season. States were experiencing flu outbreaks in early October. As of Dec. 6, 2003, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported widespread influenza in 24 states. There is no scientific evidence yet suggesting this year's influenza outbreak is worse than it has been in the past, but obviously the early start and the early widespread activity has caused greater concern.
