As your "Voice for Business," the Chamber, through its Political Action Committee, helps build and maintain key relationships that at the end of the day enable us to gel the job done!
While 2007-2008 was not a major election year, the Chamber PAC was actively engaged in a number of key local races. Several Detroit School Board members were up for re-election last fall. Given the Chamber's longstanding support for continued reform in the Detroit Public School System, the PAC supported Joyce Hayes Giles in her successful bid for reelection to the school board.
With the upcoming 2008 General Election, the Chamber PAC recently endorsed several candidates in key federal, state and local races, On the federal level, the Chamber PAC endorsed U.S. Senator Carl Levin and U.S. Congressional Representatives John Dingell, Carolyn Cheeks Kilpatrick and Joe Knoilenberg. The Chamber PAC's endorsement was based on their track record of support for key Chamber public policy priorities including trade, health care, public transit and border crossing issues.
On the state level, the Chamber PAC endorsed a bi-partisan slate of 28 candidates running for seats in the Michigan House of Representatives. The Chamber PAC also endorsed Justice Cliff Taylor for re-election to the Michigan Supreme Court. The full list of PAC endorsed candidates is available on the Chamber's website.
In total, the Detroit Regional Chamber PAC in FY 2007-08 contributed S74,000 to candidates who support our pro-business agenda.
The Chamber's 9th Annual PAC Reception during the Mackinac Policy Conference was another success for the PAC drawing over 300 attendees and raising $35,000 For the Chamber's political activities. Senior Capitol Correspondent Tim Skubick moderated a panel of political pandits in a lively discussion of the upcoming 2008 national, slate and local elections.
