Indiana's 10 Largest Life Insurance Companies

Lincoln National Corporation

Fort Wayne-headquartered Lincoln National Corporation ranks 17th on Fortune magazine's list of the U.S.'s 500 largest diversified financial companies. It offers a full line of financial services that includes life as well as property-casualty insurance, reinsurance, employee benefits and group health plans and annuities.

One of the largest segments of this 75-year-old holding company is its Lincoln National Life Insurance Company, which in and of itself ranks 33rd on the Fortune list of the country's largest life insurance companies. It sells a full range of life products through its network of regional marketing organizations that operate in 37 communities nationwide.

In 1988, Lincoln National Reinsurance Companies was identified as the seventh-largest reinsurer in the world. It entered the reinsurance business in 1912, when international tensions threatened to shut off U.S. companies from the German companies that did the lion's share of this business. Although the majority of its business today comes from U.S. companies, it is still a significant player in international markets.

American States Life Insurance Company, a wholly owned subsidiary of Lincoln National, operates out of Indianapolis. It markets individual and group life and health insurance through a network of more than 6,000 agents.

Last year, Lincoln National Life Absorbed Lincoln National Pension Insurance Company, which had previously operated as a separate entity. Within the last year, the corporation also divested itself of Lincoln National Healthcare Insurance Co. Ian M. Rolland is Lincoln National's president and CEO.

American United Life Insurance Company

In the 19th-century, Americans were leery of big business in general and insurance companies in particular, so most insurance programs were administered by fraternal organizations. Indianapolis-based American United Life Insurance Company originates from that time (1877)and that source(Knights of Pythias).

Today, AUL is licensed to sell in 44 states and accepts reinsurance from all states. Its product mix consists of individual life, health, universal life and income replacement insurance as well as group life and health insurance, annuities and pensions. The company also ranks among the top 3 percent of all U.S. life insurance companies on the basis of assets.
