India Program Training in environment, health, safety management
A trip to a local blue
jeans manufacturer for
GAP, Inc., was among the
highlights for participants
in a series of environment,
safety and health workshops
conducted in country by
ELI’s India Program in De-
cember.
e courses were de-
signed to inf‌luence values,
change behaviors, and
improve skills by convey-
ing respect for compliance
with environmental laws,
demonstrating why compli-
ance is important, and by
providing practical training
on how to comply.
As always, the ELI team,
led by Visiting Scholar and
ELI board member Usha
Wright and Co-director of
International Programs John
Pendergrass, worked with
local partners to provide
experts in India’s laws, help
coordinate the workshops,
and provide the facilities. A
retired Chief Justice of the
Indian Supreme Court was
among an outstanding facul-
ty of respected environmen-
tal experts from government,
businesses, academia, and
NGOs who were assembled
with the goal of training
managers from R&D, facto-
ries, and suppliers in India,
including general as well as
environmental managers.
e ESH workshops
were sponsored by General
Electric, Honeywell, Inger-
soll Rand, and Johnson &
Johnson. Held in the cities
of Ahmedabad and Banga-
lore, they were of particular
value to the participants,
especially for managers who
had been assigned ESH
responsibilities at their fac-
tories but were not trained
as ESH professionals. Local
government of‌f‌icials and
industrial representatives
were also in attendance.
e f‌ield trips, which also
included a trip to Ingersolls
manufacturing facility, pro-
vided them with a unique
and enriching opportunity
to examine ESH practices.
A set of follow-up work-
shops in scheduled for
March 2009 in which the
participants may return to
share what they have ac-
complished as a result of the
program.
