India's former Foreign Secretary, Shyam Saran, recently spoke at the Brookings Institution about India's view of emerging geopolitical trends.

He emphasized five interrelated geopolitical trends: the "center of gravity of economic power" has been shifting from the Atlantic to the Asia-Pacific region; the United States is in relative decline, but still ranks as the preeminent economic and military power; China, and to a lesser extent India, are emerging as great powers; energy issues will be at the forefront of geopolitical relations; and the unsettling political developments in the Middle East and their uncertain impact on Islamic fundamentalism.
