To day's progressive organizations recognize that remaining competitive depends on the creative viability of the organization. Yet for many businesses and their employees, sustaining a high level of enthusiasm, innovation and direction on a long-term basis is a distinct challenge. Even the best organizations, and individual professionals, can sometimes experience a lull in progression.

For a lot of businesses, assistance comes in the form of a professional coach. Coaching can provide both individuals and businesses with the skills needed to move past perceived barriers and progress further than ever before. A growing number of professionals are using this confidential process for short-term projects and specific goals, as well as long-term business direction.

The coach's role is that of an objective listener and guide. He/she provides a fresh viewpoint, backed by business experience. Through brainstorming, defining values and goals, setting milestones and deadlines, and developing skills and tools, the coach helps employees discover their potential and reach further than they might on their own.

Connect Public Relations, a Utah high-tech public relations agency, used coaching on a trial basis, as a tool to provide professional development for one member of its organization. According to agency partner Sherri Walkenhorst, "We liked what we saw and started seeing results immediately." The company soon expanded the program to offer coaching services to all employees, ultimately hiring the coach full time. "We've had a very positive response. Our employees are excited that we are investing in their development."

According to Walkenhorst, "Coaching allows people to progress through the organization. At an entry level, a new employee needs business skills, and here, also PR skills. Coaching and training work hand-in-hand to get them that foundation more quickly."
