The United States is often referred to as a nation of immigrants, and new data from the U.S. Census Bureau proves it's true. According to a recent survey, the immigrant population in the U.S.--those here both legally and illegally--hit a record high of 43.7 million in 2016. That's about 14 percent of the total U.S. population.* And, as this graph shows, the number of immigrants in the U.S. is projected to continue growing through 2020.
