I heart Newark.

I thank you for inclusion in "The Great Black Hope" by Benjamin Wallace-Wells (November). While the article provided an accurate and encouraging portrayal of the future of young African-American politicians, it provided a woefully inaccurate description of my great city. Newark is not "a heap-of-junk port city"--to the contrary, it is a city of limitless strength and unbounded potential with hope and promise. The nickname Brick City is representative of the characteristics of its citizens--strong, resilient, and enduring. Its community activists are some of this nation's greatest heroes. Newark is a major transportation hub with an international airport, the largest deep water port on the East Coast, and the intersection of major roadways and rail lines.
