Your article in the July 2004 issue "Army Ponders New Diesel Engine for Humvee Trucks" was very Informative and interesting. However, mention was made that "most Humvees come with a 6.2 or 6.5-liter gasoline engines," which is not completely correct. Both the GM 6.2L and GM 6.5L engines are compression-ignition engines that use diesel fuel as their primary fuel and not gasoline. The 6.2L engine was introduced initially to the Army in the Commercial Cargo Utility Vehicle (CUCV) that preceded the introduction of the Humvee.

Since the introduction of these vehicles (CUCVs and Humvees), the Army has followed the "single fuel on the battlefield" doctrine, which has resulted in ground vehicles using the aviation kerosene fuel (JP8) in lieu of diesel fuel. This has created some problems, especially when the vehicles are required to operate in hot environments under severe operational modes.
