Human rights commission meets in Paraguay.

DISCRIMINATION FACED by migrant workers in the Americas and concerns related to water rights and the indigenous peoples of the Andean region were two of the issues examined by the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) during special sessions September 5-7 in Asuncion, Paraguay.

In other public hearings, the Commission heard a report on the human rights situation in Chile and studied issues related to the handling of cases that involve human rights violations perpetrated during Uruguay's military dictatorship in the 1970s and '80s.

During its time in Paraguay, the IACHR delegation also visited the Documentation Center and Archive for the Defense of Human Rights, which holds documents, photographs, recordings and other records--known as the "Terror Files'--related to the dictatorship of Paraguayan General Alfredo Stroessner (1954-1989) and to operations conducted by the Southern Cone governments as part of coordinated repressive activities known as "Operation Condor."
