How to foster parental involvement.

According to a study by the National Council of Jewish Women, parent involvement in their children's schools needs to be improved. To help school/ home partnerships work, the organization's Center for the Child offers the following recommendations:

Recommendations for Parents

Become informed about the school's policies and programs. Learn about those regarding parental involvement and if there are committees for reviewing policies and practices on which you can participate.

Be a decision-maker. Many schools are mandated to provide parents with opportunities to be advisors and decisionmakers. See what your children's schools are doing and how you can play an active role.

Learn how to help your children with homework. Get specific guidance from your offspring's teachers on how to oversee it. This is an area where many mothers and fathers have questions. For example, should you take an active role in correcting mistakes or leave them so the teacher can see if your child understands the work?

Have your voice heard, Suggest that your children's schools conduct surveys and focus groups so educators better can understand parents' needs and feelings regarding school policies and practices. Results can be used by teams comprised of parents, teachers, and administrators to address problem areas and develop appropriate policies and programs.

Be your children's advocate, Assume an active role by immediately seeking out the support of teachers and administrators to help your kids, especially if you see a decline in their behavior or grades that might indicate a possible problem.

Value learning. When parents have high expectations, youngsters succeed in school. Show your children that you value learning, respect teachers, and that what happens in school is important.

Have high expectations for your offspring's school. Take a close look at your children's school to see how effectively teachers and administrators have fostered parental involvement.

Recommendations for Schools

Clarify how and why parents can become involved. Many don't know how to initiate contact. Schools need to clarify the available opportunities that exist.
