The way that you conduct a disciplinary meeting can mean the difference between turning around a recalcitrant employee and opening the organization to costly litigation.

Here are four tips to keep the meeting constructive and legally safe:

Leave biases at the door. If you don't get along with an employee, don't let that influence how you choose to discipline him or her.

Have pen in hand. Document the meeting with notes on the reason for the meeting, the fact that the employee was present, what was discussed and what was agreed upon. Remind bosses to turn over a copy to HR.

Avoid using a parental tone. Stick to addressing the issue...
