Car breakdowns likely will increase as Americans drive their aging cars, unless more consumers follow a regular maintenance schedule, according to statistics contained in the 1998 NAPA Auto-Attitudes Report. The survey, conducted by the AAA for the National Automotive Parts Association, reveals that, of the 1,525 people polled, four in 10 don't follow a regular schedule for tune-ups and view car repair as a major hassle. With the median age of vehicles in the U.S. now at 8.5 years--the oldest it has been in more than 40 years--preventative car maintenance has become even more critical.

The 15-city survey validates the "conventional wisdom" that consumers believe negative stereotypes about automotive technicians. Just 27% believe they are likely to get good advice, while 32% believe automotive technicians are trustworthy. To restore consumer confidence, NAPA offers 10 tips on how to find reputable, skilled auto care:

1. Shop around for an auto care facility before you need repairs. Basic maintenance is the best way to keep your car running smoothly and avoid costly repairs.

2. Don't be afraid to ask for references. A few minutes on the phone go a long way to ensuring that you get the quality car repairs you need.

3. Ask family, friends, and coworkers to recommend a reputable shop.

4. Use the Better Business Bureau in your area to check on reliability before you have repairs.

5. Don't shop for price alone. It is important to remember that you're not just paying for the cost of the part and the time it takes to install, but also for the professionalism and expertise of the technician.
