Michael Werner's Humanism 101 column ("Hope," N/D 2016) is timely and to the point. He states that it's easy to despair and lose hope over the many ills of our society: globalization, vanishing upward mobility, racism, a shrinking middle class, and an unresponsive government. This pervasive negativity fosters anti-government ideological rhetoric. Refreshingly, he reminds us that government is us, that we have the capability and responsibility to correct its failings.

The benefits we enjoy are the products of many, and we are fortunate to have them....
