The Detroit Regional Chamber Foundation hosted the 24th Annual International Consular Gala on March 7 at the Townsend Hotel in Birmingham. The event is designed to celebrate and recognize the International Consular Corps, regional and global businesses whose major contributions have positioned the Detroit Region as a significant player in the global economy and a leader in international trade.
The recipients of the prestigious World Trader of the Year and Emerging Global Leader awards this year were Wayne County Executive Robert Ficano and Rex Struble, managing partner of Stonebridge Business Partners, respectively.
"Both individuals exemplify the type of leaders the region needs to be competitive in global economy," said Detroit Regional Chamber President and CEO Richard E. Blouse Jr.
The World Trader of the Year honor is awarded to a prominent leader who has made significant contributions to the promotion of international trade in the Detroit Region and has demonstrated exceptional involvement in promoting Southeast Michigan as the best place to do business.
This award was originally presented in 1953 and past recipients include L. Brooks Patterson of Oakland County, Charles "Chip" McClure of ArvinMeritor, Nick Scheele of Ford Motor Co., Dieter Zetsche of DaimlerChrysler and Richard E. Dauch of American Axle Manufacturing.
The Emerging Global Leader was first awarded in 2006 to recognize the growing vital role non-automotive industries play in diversifying the Detroit Region's economy. The inaugural recipient was Dominic Pangborn of Pangborn Design. Last year's winner was Ron Shahani, president and CEO of Aero Services Corp.
