Government contractors hoping to do business with the new Department of Homeland Security should "hold onto your hat," advised John H. Home, co-chair of a new homeland security practice group at the law firm of Powell, Goldstein, Frazer & Murphy.

As the new agency takes shape, the acquisition process should become clearer to potential contractors, Home said.

While money will be made in the homeland security field, it won't come easily, warned Bruce Shirk, the group's co-chair. "Money is going to start flowing, but it's going to come out in little rivulets," he said.

"This is just another government procurement opportunity, and just like any other government procurement, those who are alert will get the business," said Shirk. He recommended that contractors keep an eye not only on actions planned by the federal government...
