This catalogue of an exhibition at the Art Institute of Chicago in spring 2002 presents thirty-eight paintings, ranging in date from the fifteenth to the early twentieth centuries, all of which feature animals in some prominent way. All of the paintings from the exhibit are reproduced in the volume, sometimes also as details. The earliest paintings come from Jaina illustrated manuscripts from Gujarat (cat. nos. 5, 6, 7): the latest, from Tanjore c. 1910 (cat. nos. 4, 32-33), are images produced for tourists, according to the catalogue authors.
