Hoffmann introduces us to Lindsey, whose life has recently unraveled. Her older brother Mark died tragically and her family isn't dealing well with their grief. Her younger sister acts out and argues furiously with their father. Her mother has run away to start another family since she can't face the broken one. Her father is too exhausted from work as a psychiatrist to notice his changing family. Always the "good girl," Lindsey holds it together until she develops a new habit. Starting with her father's wallet, she steals some cash. Since she's not caught, she steals a credit card.
