THE 39TH Ordinary Period of Sessions of the GAS General Assembly held June 2-3 in San Pedro Sula (Honduras) ushered in a new chapter in the history of inter-American relations. In a historic session, the heads of delegation of the 34 member states of the Organization nullified Resolution VI of the Eighth Meeting of Consultation of Ministers of Foreign Relations, adopted in Punta del Este on January 31, 1962, which excluded the government of Cuba from participating in the Inter-American System.

The June 3 resolution establishes that "Cuba's participation in the GAS shall be the result of a process of dialogue initiated at the request of the Cuban government and in accordance with the practices, purposes, and principles of the GAS."
