In 2002, Shannon Hickey, 16, of Lancaster, Pa., founded Mychal's Message--a nonprofit group that helps the homeless in Lancaster, Philadelphia, and New York--in memory of Father Mychal Judge, the New York City Fire Department chaplain who was killed on 9/11. Judge, a family friend, supported the Hickeys through Shannon's liver transplant as a baby. Upfront talked to the junior at Lancaster Catholic High School about her efforts.

(Q) What has Father Mychal taught you?

(A) To love unconditionally and respect everyone.

(Q) What was your first big project?

(A) We collected 1,500 pairs of socks and gave them to men and women on the bread line in New York that Father Mychal ministered to. When I looked into their eyes and saw how grateful they were, it was just amazing.

(Q) Any other particularly memorable moments?

(A) Meeting the President and being on The Today Show.
