Scope: The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute
seeks (U01) research project cooperative agreement
applications for the Hybrid Effectiveness-Implementation
Trials for Heart, Lung, Blood, and Sleep Diseases in
the Inpatient Setting announcement to support hybrid
effectiveness-implementation trials for heart, lung, blood
and sleep diseases in the inpatient setting.
Deadline: Letters of Intent, Nov. 9, 2020; proposals,
Dec. 9, 2020.
Funds: $2.51 million in FY2021.
Eligibility: Colleges and universities; for-prot
organizations, including small businesses; nonprot
organizations; and state, local, special district and Native
American tribal governments; among others.
Areas: NHLBI said examples of possible hybrid
effectiveness-implementation trials include but are not
limited to those aiming to: increase delivery of low tidal
volume ventilation in patients with acute respiratory
distress syndrome; increase daily spontaneous
breathing trials among eligible mechanically ventilated
patients; increase appropriate utilization of noninvasive
ventilation among patients with a chronic obstructive
pulmonary disease exacerbation or cardiogenic
pulmonary edema; and increase early cardiac
catheterization in selected unstable angina and non-
ST segment elevation myocardial infarction patients
per American College of Cardiology/American Heart
Association guidelines.

Grants for Early Medical/Surgical Specialists’
Transition to Aging Research (NIA)
Scope: The National Institute on Aging seeks (R03)
small grant program applications for the Grants for
Early Medical/Surgical Specialists’ Transition to Aging
Research announcement to provide support for early-
career physician-scientists trained in medical or surgical
specialties or early-career dentist-scientists to launch
careers as future leaders in aging- or geriatric-focused
research.
Deadline: Letters of Intent, Oct. 13, 2020; proposals,
Nov. 13, 2020.
Funds: A total of $2.4 million in FY2021 for
approximately 15 awards. The maximum project period
is two years.
Eligibility: Colleges and universities; for-prot
organizations, including small businesses; nonprot
organizations; and state, local, special district and Native
American tribal governments; among others.
Areas: NIA said research topics may include but are not
limited to: characterization of an aging-related disease,
condition, syndrome or phenomenon relevant to a
clinical specialty/discipline; elucidation of mechanisms
underlying specialty-/discipline-related diseases in
older age; identication of predictors and/or outcomes
of specialty-/discipline-related interventions specic to
older populations; and pilot investigation of a specialty-/
discipline-related intervention in older adults.
