Did You Know?
Researchers at the Bost on University School of Public Healt h found that states with relaxed crit eria for concealed
carry of g uns have a higher rate of handgun deaths than st ates with stricter requir ements. Results from the 25-year
study found that lenient “shall issue” laws were as sociated with a 6.5 percent higher total homic ide rate than more
stringent “may issue” laws, as wel l as an 8.6 percent higher firearm homicide rate and
a 10.6 percent higher handgun homicide rate. Resea rchers say their findings
demonstrate that the national t rend toward relaxed concealed carr y
laws and reciprocity bet ween states is a public safety risk.

Police Beat
Officers wearing body c ameras reported using force about as of ten as police colleagues who didn’ t have them, according to
a report by the District of Col umbia police department ’s in-house research team. The study also found
that citizen complaints were pretty even against both groups. Despite these results, proponents say
video footage can offer a clearer record of controversial incidents and improve public trust.

Whiteout
President Donald Trump is reversing the slow uptick t oward a more diverse judiciary by nominat ing white men

81 percent are male wit h few African-America ns or Hispanics in the mix, a ccording to an Associated Press anal-
ysis. The last president to nomin ate such a homogenous group was George H.W. Bush.
The White House has been upfr ont about its goal to fill the bench with cons ervatives,
indicating that judicia l philosophy trumps concerns about racia l or gender diversity.

Hearsay Say What?
The Louisiana Supreme Court ruled that
a suspect’s statement during a police interrogation—
“I know that I didn’t do it so why don’t you just give
me a lawyer dog”—could be interpreted as a request
for a canine attorney, as opposed to an exercise of his
Sixth Amendment right to counsel. The high
court held that Warren Demesme’s “ambiguous
and equivocal reference to a ‘law yer dog’ does
not constitute an invocation of counsel”
that requires police to end their interrogation.
