I want to thank Ted Sorensen for his courage and willingness to produce a speech this country desperately needs ("The New Vision," July/August). He did so once before, in the days of my parents, at a time when America was aching for a message of hope and action rather than fear and division, and he has done so again now. Unfortunately, I see very few of the candidates as willing to deliver this piece.

Still, I am trying to remain optimistic. We do have candidates today who have the potential not just to stand up and say what is written by Mr. Sorensen, but to truly commit to the principles and ideals embedded in these words. However, these candidates--although intelligent, wealthy, and accomplished--are no more than what the American public makes of them. Until we the people call for this speech and all it embodies, nothing will happen. Thank you, Mr. Sorensen, for reminding us what we as a people and a country are capable of.
