Edgy, earthy--and filled with literary references--perhaps a strange mix. Julia is telling the story of her best friend Ruth's pregnancy and childbirth. They are high school students, and Ruth is from an extremely religious family of Christian fundamentalists. Ruth understands rightly that her parents will never accept this baby, so Julia and Ruth plot to hide the pregnancy: Julia will help deliver the baby in a vacation cabin, and then they will leave the baby in a safe place to be adopted. After this, they can get on with their lives. That's their plan, anyway.

But stuff happens. First of all, Ruth falls in love with her newborn baby and wouldn't give her up, ever. And Ruth's brother becomes part of...
