I read and reread Ruth Conniff's interview with Heidi Hartmann (August issue), wanting to make sure that I fully understood the points Hartmann was making, and each time I found myself feeling very angry. I am a full-time professional and mother of two children. The stress of juggling parenting, job, and maintaining a home (not to mention continuing my education so that I can keep my teaching license and advance on the pay scale) is nearly unbearable.

In her opening questions, Conniff tried to address that situation in which so many women find themselves, only to have the concerns rather glibly dismissed by Hartmann, who appears to blame the stress on our materialism. Hartmann's experience raising her...
