While managing Phantom Canyon Ranch in his hometown of Livermore a quarter-century ago, Carl Judson took up painting. "I read an essay by Winston Churchill about outdoor painting," he said. "He recommended it for people who were overworked and overstressed."

Only Judson didn't want his cowboys to discover his new hobby, so he started building pochade boxes for his paints, brushes and canvases-in-progress that he'd hide under his car seat.
