Thirty-one state legislators nationwide who serve in the National Guard or Reserves have formed the National Network of Legislators in the Military to share information about balancing their twin responsibilities.

Hawaii Representative K. Mark Takai is the group's first chairman. They formed after a national survey found that at least 57 state legislators were currently serving. The survey also found that 30 state legislators, including Takai, have been mobilized at least once in the war on terror and that most states have at least one lawmaker serving in the Guard or Reserve.
