Some time ago, the AICPA set up an internal classification for public practice firms. Under this classification, firms with fewer than 50 AICPA members were dubbed Group A, firms with more than 50 CPAs belonging to the Institute became Group B, and the very largest firms (at the time, the Big 8) were considered Group C. While the terms Group A and Group C were not widely used publicly, a special practice advisory committee for the Group B firms was established and has been an influential voice for large firms since the mid-1970s.
