The terrible terrorist attacks on New York City's World Trade Center and the Pentagon on September 11, with the loss of more than 6,000 lives, were only the latest incidents of international terrorism. Nearly 90 terrorist groups in countries around the world have been responsible for the deaths of thousands of innocent civilians. In the year 2000 alone, there were 178 terrorist attacks on American companies. U.S. military, government personnel, and diplomats have also been the targets of terrorists. The graph below shows the total number of international terrorist attacks between 1981 and 2000.
