Election Log: Where Are the Voters on Election Day?

Americans celebrate the anniversary of the country's independence with fireworks, parades, barbecues, and other Fourth of July festivities. But when it comes to electing the Presidents who lead the nation, a growing number of people seem to be too busy to go to the polls. The graph below shows the percentage of voting-age Americans who actually voted in presidential elections from the first election of Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1932 through the second election of Bill Clinton in 1996. Public-opinion pollsters say this year's election contest between Vice President Al Gore and Texas Governor George W. Bush is running neck and neck. Will the close race convince more Americans to go to the polls on November 7?
