In 1886, the Statue of Liberty, a gift from the people of France, was dedicated in New York Harbor. Long before that, people had been coming to America to seek a new life, free of oppression, and with the promise of economic opportunity. Since 1820, when accurate record keeping began, more than 66 million immigrants from countries around the world have journeyed to America's shores fueled only by the hope of a brighter tomorrow. The data in this graph break down by decade the numbers in that stream of hopeful immigrants. Use the data to answer the questions below.
