Tuberculosis Research Units (NIAID)
Scope: The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious
Diseases seeks (U19) research program cooperative
agreement applications for the Tuberculosis Research
Units announcement to support the establishment of
multidisciplinary Tuberculosis (TB) Research Units
that will operate as a collaborative network to improve
understanding of Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb)-host
interactions through characterization of bacterial and
host determinants that are relevant during stages of
infection and disease, and analyses of bacterial and
host heterogeneity on disease outcomes.
Deadline: Letters of Intent are due 30 days prior to the
application due date. Proposals are due Sept. 28, 2020.
Funds: $10 million in FY2020 for two to three awards.
The maximum project period is ve years.
Eligibility: Colleges and universities; for-prot
organizations, including small businesses; nonprot
organizations; and state, local, special district and Native
American tribal governments; among others.
Areas: NIAID said examples of potential research areas
include but are not limited to: functional characterization
of essential virulence factors of Mtb that are relevant
during various stages of infection and disease
progression; comprehensive studies to determine the
impact of phenotypic or genotypic diversity within the
infecting bacterial population on bacterial persistence,
disease progression and disease outcome; studies to
understand how bacterial metabolic or other physiologic
changes mediate the evolution of resistance and
persistence; and identication of bacterial-specic
markers that correlate with latency, progression to active
disease, persistence or high-transmission potential, to
enable the development of tools to better measure and
predict TB outcomes; among others.

Grants to Enhance State Adult Protective
Services (ACL)
Scope: The Administration for Community Living seeks
applications for the FY2020 Grants to Enhance State
Adult Protective Services (APS).
Deadline: June 16, 2020.
Funds: $2.1 million total for up to three awards ranging
from $700,000 to $1 million.
Eligibility: State governments.
Areas: ACL said this year’s solicitation is a pilot/
demonstration to identify effective strategies and
solutions that are expected to maximize the impact
of direct home- and community-based social, health
and mental/behavioral health services for APS
clients impacted by the opioid epidemic. ACL invites
applications that seek to achieve: improvements in the
capacity of APS to serve and assist clients impacted
by the opioid crisis, and improvements in the state’s
abiltiy to document and report to the National Adult
Maltreatment Report Sytem (NAMRS) case, client, and
perpetrator data for opioid-related APS cases.
