Grants awarded for 24 water, sewer, stormwater projects.

The S.C. Rural Infrastructure Authority has awarded $10.8 million in grants for 24 projects in 19 counties.

The projects include improvements to water, sewer and stormwater capacity statewide. Work includes extending sewer service to existing and expanding industries, digging wells, upgrading water lines, pump stations and storage tanks, and addressing drainage issues to alleviate storm-related flooding.

The improvements will benefit more than 18,000 residential and business customers, according to a news release from the organization.

The RIA awards grants twice a year through a competitive process. Projects that improve public health, environmental protection and community sustainability are considered for the program based on criteria such as the severity of the problem, feasibility and expected outcome. Grant recipients share the projects' costs.
