Call to shutter NEH leaves
grantseekers uneasy
President Trump’s repeated calls to shutter the
National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH)
have left the arts community anxious about the
future of federal support of the arts.
In late May, NEH Deputy Chair Margaret
Plympton released a statement regarding the
agency’s budget: “The White House has requested
that Congress appropriate approximately $42
million to NEH [in FY2018] for the orderly closure
of the agency…. as NEH awaits Congressional
action on the President’s proposed budget, the
agency is continuing normal operations and will be
making the next round of FY2017 awards following
the meeting of the National Council in July.”
NEH has designed a list of frequently asked
questions to address growing concerns of
organizations seeking funding or currently in the
middle of a grant cycle:
Is NEH closed? No. NEH is not closed. NEH
is not in the process of shutting down. Using funds
appropriated for the current scal year, NEH is
continuing its normal operations and intends to
award additional grants following the meeting of
the National Council on the Humanities in July
2017.
Is NEH closed to new applications? NEH
will continue to accept grant applications for
FY2018 according to its established deadlines and
will continue to operate as usual unless and until
the President and Congress require otherwise.
What if I have already received an NEH
grant award, or an offer for a grant award?
NEH has set aside the full funding amount for
grants awarded, as is reected in the Notice
of Action and other grant documents you have
received.
According to the NEH, the agency has issued
more than 63,000 grants, totaling more than
$5.3 billion since its inception in 1965. To see
