NSF post-doctoral
fellowships available
The National Science Foundation’s Division
of Earth Sciences (EAR) has released a funding
opportunity notice for the Postdoctoral Fellowships
program to support researchers for a period of up
to two years with fellowships that can be taken to
the institution of their choice, including institutions
abroad.
According to the announcement, funding will
assist recent doctoral graduates so that they may
carry out an integrated program of independent
research and professional development, while
addressing scientic questions within the scope
of EAR disciplines. The program is intended to
recognize beginning investigators of signicant
potential, NSF said, and provide them with
research experience, mentorship and training that
will establish them in leadership positions in the
Earth Sciences community.
The NSF said eligible individuals must be:
• U.S. citizens (or nationals) or legally admitted
permanent residents of the United States;
• A graduate student or, at the deadline date,
have served in a position requiring the doctoral
degree for no more than 18 full-time-equivalent
months since earning the degree;
• Able to present a research plan that falls
within the purview of the Division of Earth
Sciences at NSF;
• Able to carry out the fellowship at the
institution where they received their doctoral
degree or current institution and, at the time of
submission, have two scientic mentors, one at
the hosting institution and another mentor at a
different institution;
• Unconnected to a similar program under
another NSF program.
Under this solicitation, $1.7 million total will be
available for up to 10 awards. The deadline to apply
is Oct. 25, 2017.

Impact Aid Discretionary Construction Grant
Program (ED)
Scope: The Education Department’s Office of
Elementary and Secondary Education seeks
applications for the Impact Aid Discretionary
Construction Grant Program.
Deadline: Sept. 15, 2017.
Funds: $17.4 million for up to eight awards ranging
from $60,000 to $6 million. The maximum project
period is five years.
Eligibility: Local educational agencies (LEAs). See
the announcement for complete details.
Areas: ED said funding will provide grants for
emergency repairs and modernization of school
facilities to certain LEAs that receive Impact Aid
formula funds.

Promise Neighborhoods Program (ED)
Scope: The Education Department’s Office of
Innovation and Improvement seeks applications for
the FY2017 Promise Neighborhoods program to
significantly improve the academic and developmental
outcomes of children living in the most distressed
communities of the United States, including ensuring
school readiness, high school graduation and access
to a community-based continuum of high-quality
services.
Deadline: Letters of Intent, Aug. 21, 2017; proposals,
Sept. 5, 2017.
Funds: $30 million for five to seven awards ranging
from $4 million to $6 million. The maximum project
period is five years.
Eligibility: Colleges and universities, nonprofit
organizations, and Native American tribes or tribal
