$1M available for CMV
training grant program
The U.S. Department of Transportation’s
(DOT’s) Federal Motor Carrier Safety
Administration recently released a federal funding
opportunity for the FY2016 Commercial Motor
Vehicle Operator Safety Training (CMVOST)
Grant Program to reduce the severity and number
of crashes on U.S. roads involving commercial
motor vehicles by training operators and future
operators in the safe use of such vehicles.
This year, the department said its CMVOST
national priority is to train current and former
members of the United States Armed Forces,
including National Guard members and reservists.
spouses and children of service members are
also eligible for such training, DOT said, with or
without the service member.
Eligible organizations include entities that
provide CMV operator training, such as accredited
public or private colleges, universities, vocational-
technical schools, postsecondary educational
institutions, truck driver training schools,
associations, and state and local governments,
including Native American tribal governments, the
department said.
DOT expects to make up to $1 million
available for up to 10 awards, according to the
announcement, for projects of up to 24 months
in length. A 20 percent match or cost share is
required from successful applicants.

Creative Writing Fellowships (NEA)
Scope: The National Endowment for the Arts seeks
applications for Creative Writing Fellowships to support
creative writers of prose (fiction and creative nonfiction)
and poetry, enabling recipients to set aside time for
writing, research, travel and general career advancement.
Deadline: March 9, 2016.
Funds: Grants of up to $25,000.
Eligibility: Qualified individuals.
Areas: NEA said in FY2017, fellowships in poetry are
available.

Challenge America Grant Program (NEA)
Scope: The National Endowment for the Arts seeks
applications for the FY2017 Challenge America Grant
Program to support small and midsized organizations for
projects that extend the reach of the arts to underserved
populations—those whose opportunities to experience
the arts are limited by geography, ethnicity, economics or
disability.
Deadline: April 14, 2016.
Funds: Awards of up to $10,000.
Eligibility: Colleges and universities; nonprofit
organizations; state, local, special district and Native
American tribal governments; and independent school
districts.
Areas: NEA said grants are available for professional
arts programming and for projects that emphasize the
potential of the arts in community development.
