GoPro Appoints Openly Gay Director: Golden State Warriors president joins a small list of identified LGBT in the boardroom.

Rick Welts, the president of the Golden State Warriors who is openly gay, was appointed to the board of directors of GoPro, Inc. Currently in his seventh season with the five-time world champion Warriors, he previously spent nine years with the Phoenix Suns, serving as president and CEO for two seasons. It was during his tenure with the Suns that Welts came out publicly as a gay man; something that was rare in the world of professional men's team sports.

In a New York Times interview in 2011, Welts said about gay issues and sports: "This is one of the last industries where the subject is off-limits. Nobody's comfortable in engaging in a conversation."

Welts may also be bucking the trend in the corporate boardroom where the LGBT subject can be taboo. There are fewer than 10 openly LGBT directors on Fortune 500 companies, less than 0.03%, according to 0utLeadership.com. And, the advocacy group also reports that there are "only two companies in the Fortune 500 reference sexual orientation and gender identity in their board's diversity statements."
