Recent economic reports bring both good and bad news. The number of people working in Indiana is up, but so is the unemployment rate. Still, Hoosiers celebrated the Christmas season with a healthy shopping spree.

Indiana payroll employment rose to new all-time highs in December, both before and after seasonal adjustment, which is the good news. But at the same time, the state's total work force--which includes both employed and unemployed Hoosiers--declined, because many workers quit seeking jobless benefits and dropped out of the labor force entirely. As a result, the unemployment rate rose to 6.4 percent in December, which is the bad news.
