Good health: new and expanded area hospitals.

In Michiana, in order to keep up with the increasing demand for health services, many hospitals are expanding, and in some cases building entirely new facilities to better serve patients and visiting family members.

MEMORIAL HOSPITAL AND HEALTH SYSTEM

Memorial Hospital and Health System is expanding its surgical suite, the largest expansion in Memorial's 112 years of operation.

In total, the project covers more than 220,000 square feet at a cost of $79.4 million and will include a new sterile processing center, new main entrance, an energy center and receiving dock.

According to Memorial president and CEO Philip Newbold, the expansion was a result of an increase in yearly surgical cases. "We are now performing close to 14,000 surgeries a year and we're outgrowing our existing space. The extensive project will allow us to accommodate a 53 percent

increase in surgical cases to keep up with the increased demand for specialized care," adds Newbold.

Memorial will also be adding to free-standing emergency rooms in Michiana. The $11.4 million project is anticipated to lighten the load of the main hospital. The facility will offer 10 beds, five pediatric rooms and an EMS support area and is expected to be completed sometime in 2009.

SAINT JOSEPH REGIONAL MEDICAL CENTER

Michiana is also looking forward to the completion of Saint Joseph Regional Medical Center's new $355 million facility at Edison Lakes Corporate Park in Mishawaka in the fall of 2009.

The 633,000-square-foot facility will sit on a 90-acre site that will provide a state-of-the-art diagnostic and treatment platform, 254 hotel or home-like private inpatient rooms and medical office buildings. Saint Joseph Regional Medical Center has designed the facility to meet the community's health care challenges and changes of the 21 st century.
