Gonzalez-Jimenez De Ruiz v. U.S., 231 F.Supp.2d 1187 (M.D.Fla. 2002). Survivors of a federal prison inmate who died while in custody brought claims under the Federal Tort Claims Act (FTCA). The district court granted summary judgment in favor of the defendants. The court held that the family failed to state a claim under Florida law. The family alleged that prison officials deceived the inmate's family regarding the inmate's terminal condition, failed to provide the family with reasonable access to the inmate during his illness, failed to inform the family of the inmate's death, offered the inmate substandard care, and delayed transporting the inmate's remains for nine days after his death.
